When you substitute a normal ride cymbal with a crash, does it have to be a crash-ride or just a crash?
When you substitue the hi-hat or ride to keep a rhythm in a song, particularly in the choruses or rock songs, do you have to use a crash-ride or can you use just a regular crash?
Rides would be good to use as crashes or vise versa are generally called "Crash Rides" . They can be used as a crash or a ride cymbal.
Many professional drummers don't use them because they're very particular about wanting a certain ride sound that you can't get in a crash... or the other way round.
Some regular rides produce also good crash sounds. The key is to find something in between, which can be challenging. Something that you like the sound of as a ride but also like how it sounds when you crash it. You may find a crash that has a ride sound you want or a ride that has a crash sound you want. The best thing to do is to play as many cymbals in person.
We hope this will work for you, best luck and enjoy drumming!
